10 Ways to Control Nighttime Sweats When You Have Hyperhidrosis

Do you wake up at night sweating — even when it’s not hot? These tips can help.

Excessive sweat is a challenging condition to live with — and if you experience excessive sweating primarily at night, it’s often a sign of what’s called secondary hyperhidrosis.

According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society (IHS), hyperhidrosis can be separated into two categories: primary, or excessive sweating, which is not caused by medication or another health condition, and secondary.

Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by an underlying medical condition — such as thyroid disease, pregnancy, alcoholism, tuberculosis, or heart disease,” explains Bruce Robinson, MD, FAAD, a dermatologist in New York City who is a national spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology and a fellow of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.

Secondary hyperhidrosis can also be caused by taking certain medications like antidepressants, hormonal changes during menopause, hormone therapy, and diabetes treatments.
