Recovering From Mono: What Doctors Want You to Know

If you or someone you love has been sidelined by mononucleosis, aka mono, getting lots of rest and taking good care of yourself will be key to feeling better and recovering sooner.

Mono is a very common illness usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) that can leave teens and adults feeling like they’re fighting the worst cold or flu they’ve ever had. While mono symptoms mostly disappear in most people after two to four weeks (and it is rare to get the illness again), the fatigue associated with mono can last for an additional several weeks. It may take an extra month or two after symptoms disappear to regain your typical energy and strength.

Though many individuals may be eager to get back to their usual routines, not rushing the recovery process is actually one of the most important steps you can take to not interfere with your body’s healing process.

Mono symptoms can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a month, and (for teens and adults) resemble a severe cold or flu. Since mono is caused by a viral infection, antibiotics and other drugs don’t treat the cause of the illness — so medication won’t necessarily make the mono go away faster. Resting and getting plenty of fluids is therefore what doctors prescribe to allow your body what it needs to heal itself.
