Vaping, or using e-cigarettes, has become more popular among teens and young adults in recent decades. Seen as less harmful and more socially acceptable than smoking, vape devices are sold in various colors and flavors that appeal to young people.

E-cigarettes and other vaping devices create a water vapor–like aerosol that delivers various chemicals to your lungs when inhaled.

“The electronic device[s] may contain nicotine, CBD, or marijuana, depending on the type of device,” says Mary Martinasek, PhD, professor of public health at the University of Tampa and member of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).

E-cigarettes are known by a variety of names, like e-cigs, mods, vapes, and vape pens.
