Menopause Scams to Watch Out For

As more and more menopause products flood the market, it’s getting harder to know which products are legit or a hoax. Women’s health expert Lisa Larkin, MD, offers tips on what to watch out for.

In case you haven’t heard, menopause is having a moment. By 2025, an expected one billion women will have experienced perimenopause, and that same year experts predict the menopause industry — because, yes, there very much is such a thing — will hit $600 billion, according to the Global Wellness Summit.

That’s a lot of people spending a lot of money on menopause, which refers to the 12 months after a woman’s last period. But the transition into menopause — known as perimenopause — can last seven to 14 years, typically beginning between ages 45 and 55. During this period, women experience changes in the production of estrogen and progesterone, which can lead to classic symptoms like hot flashes or weight gain.

In other words: It’s a wild ride. And these days, entrepreneurs are cashing in. A huge influx of products targeted at menopausal women have hit the market in recent years: You can now, for instance, buy clothing specially designed to relieve hot flashes and other menopause symptoms, or you can shop for beauty brands focused on menopausal health.

But unlike, say, cold plunges or red light therapy, menopause is not some fleeting wellness trend. This is a real and often bewildering phase of life for women, one that has been largely misunderstood or outright ignored for too many years. With so many products now on the market, what’s the best way to tell what’s legit and what’s not?
